Beeswax Encaustic on board
Vimala is a 31 year old Indian born Encaustic artist.
Encaustic is an ancient artform with the use of Beeswax and Resin that dates back to the 5th Century B.C.
Vimala loves wax. She has been producing stunning handmade candles for many years while experimenting with the use of wax in other ways. She naturally progressed to painting with Beeswax and discovered the pleasure of Encaustic.
There are very few Encaustic artists in Australia however it has been popular in the U.S.A and U.K for many years.
With photography it is difficult to capture the incredible texture that can be achieved and the wonderful scent that the medium emits, particularly Vim's work as the texture has a captivating effect on the viewer combined with the sensual aroma.
These pieces are abstract, however the texture and amazing depth of colour draw you in and takes you to a place you feel you know.
They are emotional and spiritual pieces. Beeswax itself is believed by many cultures to have a force of it's own, natural energy perhaps even healing qualities.
Vim has exhibited in a number of group shows and 1 solo show in Sydney. She has also completed a number of commissioned pieces.
People sometimes worry because of the nature of the wax that it will melt on hot days. Beeswax has a high melt point of between 62 and 64 degrees C so unless it is above a fireplace they will not melt.
Beeswax is impervious to moisture which means they will not deteriorate. It does not contain solvents or oils so will not darken or yellow with age. They can be buffed to bring out the sheen.
